The Process
All my paintings begin with an underpainting and a plan for composition. Then I add the areas of color with thick brushstrokes of oil as if it were stain glass leaving bits of the underpainting to come through between the strokes of color. This gives the painting overall harmony and energy. The 1 3/4" deep canvas edges are also painted so the painting can be hung without a frame. Smaller paintings done on panel are framed.

Winter Solstice
Fresh Off the Easel 12/30/19
15 x 10 Oil on Panel
I was looking at face book a few weeks ago and my friend Kristen Anderson posted this nice picture of her walk in the snow covered woods up in Tahoe Donner where I live. The sun was shining through the trees and casting shadows on the snow. I decided to try and paint was I saw and felt about the light. Its made me realize the importance of focusing less on the objects and paying more attention to the quality of light. I hope to paint more light in 2020. Happy New Year!
Mosaic Light
Fresh off the Easel 12/15/19
9 x 12 Oil on Panel
Yes I have been painting I just haven't posted to this page in a while. Family is taking much of my time these days and posting has fallen to the bottom of my pile of things to do. I hope to be better about it in the New Year. I went for bright color in this one. Those violet blue shadows are a lovely contrast to the warm color of the waving grass. This painting captures the movement of nature pulling you through and around the picture, giving you a sense of being swept away..
Donner Lake Morning
30 x 48 Original Oil on 1 3/4"Deep Canvas
Fresh off the Easel 1/25/2019
Fall morning at Donner Lake painted with thick brushstrokes of bright color. The movement of the strokes make the painting come alive and give a sense of being there in that moment. The summits majesty reflects in its surface giving sparkling color to the lake below.
Donner Lake holds a special place in my heart. Its a happy place and I believe this painting reflects the joy that it brings to people who visit there.

The Golden Hour
36x36 Oil on 1 3/4"Canvas
Fresh off the Easel 1/25/2019
The beautiful emerald green rolling hills of the Napa-Sonoma region under the spell of the golden hour. The light is golden and kissing the graceful oak trees the create a tapestry on the hillside. Verdant strokes of thick color display Springs glory as the lupine and poppies dance in the breeze.
I grew up in Sonoma County in the hills between St. Helena and Santa Rosa. The view of these hillsides always gives me a sense of joy and solace. The wine country is blessed with an abundance of lush growth and color in the Spring.
